Is IE Business School right for you?
IE Business School runs one of Europe's most entrepreneurial MBA programmes. Based in Madrid, the programme attracts a global cohort of roughly 500 students, with a strong lean toward people who want to build something — whether that's a startup, a new division within a large company, or a career in venture capital.
If you're an Indian applicant considering IE, here's the honest take: this is not a programme that optimises for traditional consulting or banking placements the way Oxford or INSEAD does. IE's strength is in entrepreneurship, tech, and innovation. If that's your trajectory, IE punches well above its weight. If you're primarily targeting McKinsey London, you should look elsewhere.
The culture at IE is distinctly different from UK programmes. It's more informal, more experimental, and more forgiving of non-traditional backgrounds. If you don't have the 'perfect' profile — if you've changed careers, if your GMAT isn't a 740, if your path has been unconventional — IE is a place that values the story behind the numbers.
The application process
IE's admissions process is rolling, which means there are no fixed rounds. You can apply at any time, and decisions are made on a continuous basis. This is both an advantage (flexibility) and a trap (procrastination). Apply early in the cycle for the best scholarship consideration.
The application has four components: online application form, GMAT/GRE scores, a behavioural interview, and written essays. IE's interview is distinctive — it's not a traditional Q&A. They use a behavioural assessment that evaluates how you think under pressure, how you collaborate, and how you handle ambiguity.
Essays at IE tend to focus on your entrepreneurial mindset and your ability to articulate impact. 'Tell us about a time you created something from nothing' is a common theme, even if it's not the literal prompt. If your career has been purely execution-focused, you'll need to find the moments where you showed initiative.
One IE-specific quirk: they weight the interview heavily. An outstanding interview can compensate for a middling GMAT. A poor interview, even with a 750, can result in a rejection. Prepare accordingly.
What IE Business School actually looks for
IE's admissions committee is looking for three things: entrepreneurial drive, international mindset, and diversity of perspective.
Entrepreneurial drive doesn't mean you need to have founded a company. It means you should demonstrate a pattern of creating value in unstructured environments — launching a new initiative at work, building a community, solving a problem no one asked you to solve. They want builders, not just optimisers.
International mindset is non-negotiable at IE. The class is genuinely global, with no single nationality dominating. They want people who've lived, worked, or studied across cultures — or who can demonstrate a genuine curiosity about perspectives beyond their own.
IE also cares about what you'll contribute to the classroom. They look at your profile through the lens of: 'Will this person make the cohort richer?' If you bring an industry or geographic perspective that's underrepresented, that's a real advantage.

The average GMAT at IE is around 670, which is lower than Oxford (690) or INSEAD (730). But don't mistake a lower average for lower standards — IE evaluates holistically, and the GMAT is just one signal among many.
For Indian applicants, a GMAT in the 660–720 range puts you in the competitive zone. Below 650, you'll need exceptional professional experience and a standout interview. Above 720, your GMAT becomes a non-factor and everything else needs to shine.
IE also offers its own admission test (the IE Global Admissions Test, or IEGAT) as an alternative to the GMAT/GRE. It's an adaptive, online test that some applicants find more comfortable. If you struggle with standardised testing, explore this option.
Academic background matters less at IE than at some other programmes. They regularly admit applicants from non-traditional academic paths — design, humanities, military, arts — as long as the overall profile is compelling.
Career outcomes for Indian and Southeast Asian graduates
This is where IE's positioning gets interesting for Indian applicants. The headline placement stats show strong numbers in consulting (25%) and tech (20%), but the real story is in entrepreneurship and the startup ecosystem.
Madrid has emerged as one of Europe's fastest-growing startup hubs. IE's location and alumni network give you direct access to this ecosystem in a way that London or Paris programmes can't — because the competition for those opportunities is less intense and the network effects are concentrated.
For consulting recruitment: IE places well into Spanish and European offices of major firms. UK office placements are less common than from Oxford or LBS, but if you're open to working in Southern Europe, the opportunities are strong.
Visa considerations: Spain's entrepreneur visa programme is one of the most startup-friendly in Europe. If you're planning to launch a venture post-MBA, Spain's regulatory environment is more accommodating than the UK's for non-EU founders. IE's entrepreneurship lab and venture lab provide additional support.
If you plan to return to India, IE's alumni network in South Asia is smaller than INSEAD's but growing. The IE brand is well-recognised by global employers, though it carries more weight in Europe and Latin America than in Asia.
Cost and financial aid
Total cost for the IE MBA — tuition, living expenses in Madrid, and personal costs — runs between €85,000 and €100,000 for the year. Tuition alone is €72,200 for the 2025-26 intake.
The good news: Madrid is significantly more affordable than London, Paris, or Fontainebleau. Rent, food, and transport are roughly 30–40% lower than in London, which makes a material difference to your total outlay.
IE offers merit-based scholarships ranging from 10% to 50% of tuition. The IE Foundation Scholarship and the IE Women in Business Scholarship are two notable options. Early applications typically receive stronger scholarship consideration.
For Indian applicants, IE also partners with several loan providers. Prodigy Finance and MPOWER are the most commonly used options for international students at IE. Start the financial planning process alongside your application — don't wait for the offer letter.
Life at IE and in Madrid
Madrid is one of the best cities in Europe to be a student. Full stop. The quality of life — weather, food, nightlife, culture — is extraordinary, and the cost of living is manageable on a student budget.
IE's campus in the María de Molina area is compact but modern. The Wow Room (IE's immersive technology classroom) is a genuine differentiator — it's not a gimmick, it's a tool that changes how case discussions work.
The social culture at IE is intense. Class dinners, networking events, startup weekends, and spontaneous plans are constant. If you're the type who recharges alone, budget your energy carefully — the programme is socially demanding in the best way.
For Indian students: Madrid has a growing Indian community, excellent Indian restaurants (try the Lavapiés neighbourhood), and direct flight connections from major Indian cities. Culturally, the warmth and sociability of Spanish culture resonates with many Indian students in a way that Northern European cultures sometimes don't.
Language: while the MBA is taught in English, basic Spanish will make your life significantly better. IE offers Spanish language courses, and you'll want to invest in them. Many social and professional interactions in Madrid happen in Spanish.
Frequently asked questions
What GMAT score do I need for IE Business School?
The average GMAT at IE is around 670. Competitive Indian applicants typically score in the 660–720 range. IE also accepts its own IEGAT test as an alternative. The interview is weighted heavily — a strong interview can compensate for a moderate GMAT.
Is IE Business School good for entrepreneurship?
Yes — entrepreneurship is IE's core strength. Madrid's growing startup ecosystem, IE's venture lab, and Spain's entrepreneur visa programme make it one of the best European MBAs for founders. Roughly 15-20% of graduates launch ventures within two years.
Can I work in Spain after an IE MBA?
Yes. Spain offers a post-study work permit, and IE has strong employer relationships in Madrid and across Spain. Spain's entrepreneur visa is particularly accessible for MBA graduates who want to launch a startup.
How does IE compare to INSEAD?
IE is a 1-year programme in Madrid known for entrepreneurship and tech innovation. INSEAD is a standalone programme with campuses in France and Singapore, known for consulting placements and its massive alumni network. IE is the stronger choice if you're drawn to startups or Southern Europe.
Does IE have rolling admissions?
Yes. Unlike most top European programmes, IE uses rolling admissions — there are no fixed rounds. You can apply at any time. However, applying early gives you better access to scholarships and ensures you're competing against a smaller pool.
